What is a SEVA?

“I am honored to be of service for this positive community that stands for so much more this world needs…GIVING! Not taking is an essential, important lesson that brings me joy, commitment and kindness toward the journey within and all around…” Aaron Lyons, Seva at the Tree of Life Center

The Art of Selfless Service. … “Seva” is a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service” or work performed without any thought of reward or repayment. In ancient India it was believed to help one’s spiritual growth and at the same time contribute to the improvement of a community. The program offered at the Tree of Life is one of passion and transformation. It encourages and enables one to take the step into a complete lifestyle change and empowers them to go deeper within themselves spiritually with an opportunity to engage in karma yoga (“discipline of action”) in the context of a spiritual community setting.

During the 3-month program, participants work in different areas around the Tree of Life Center including the garden, maintenance and sprout house. Although they are typically assigned a focused job, they are also part of a “fill-in community” meaning they help wherever they are needed. Their full participation in all events is required including meditation and yoga/qigong classes. In return for their service, sevas are given full access to all meals at the Tree of Life’s 100% raw, vegan café along with optional housing in the on-site dorms.
